The new film’s writer and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a multidimensional chess online game, to have mortal bet, ranging from Johnny, his manager (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Received), a cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a great scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sibling (Nina Foch) did within gambling establishment and you will dated good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). This new caustically epigrammatic software, brand new cast’s suavely regulated gestures regarding like and you may risk, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can stylishly assertive pictures (plus his political conscience) get this to pugnacious but really in depth spectacle a hidden vintage of your genre.” [ ten ]

Cobb, as the a police inspector, also up the get . Although the plot follows a common trend, the fresh characterizations are fresh together with performances sufficient in order to overbalance. Dialog are terse and you may relevant, steering clear of the psychological, phoney contact. Unusual digital camera bases come along on occasion to help you escalate desire and you can momentarily stop the interest. Strong teamplay from the Robert Rossen, doubling because movie director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, original copywriter and associate music producer, also helps with rendering it a softer design.” [ eleven ]

Its mostly a matter of enjoying Mr. Powell read his paces fashionably while a massive throw out-of stars and you can stars offer him traditional help. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable absolutely nothing lady who brings about the fresh finest in him and you can Ellen Drew is the sleek and slinky vixen which gets him with the jams.
